How Do I Choose a Mechanical Engineering Research Topic for Publication?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on selecting a mechanical engineering research topic for publication. The key takeaway is that aspiring researchers should begin by identifying a specific problem to address rather than immediately focusing on publication. Engaging with a professor for guidance is crucial, as they can suggest relevant topics and advise on the publication process. Presenting findings at conferences before submitting to peer-reviewed journals is also recommended for gaining visibility and feedback.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering principles
  • Familiarity with academic research methodologies
  • Knowledge of the publication process in scientific journals
  • Experience in presenting research at academic conferences
NEXT STEPS
  • Identify specific problems in mechanical engineering to explore
  • Research recent publications in top journals like the Journal of Mechanical Engineering
  • Learn about the peer review process and how to prepare a manuscript
  • Explore opportunities for presenting at conferences in mechanical engineering
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineering students, researchers seeking publication, and professionals looking to enhance their academic profiles through research and presentations.

Hello everyone,I am a mechanical engineering student and yesterday I convinced my professor to work on a project where it will be published in a journal about one year from now.I really don't know where to start as there are countless of highy-respected researches at top universities such as ETH,Stanford etc.I would really appreciate it if someone could guide me, and maybe if possible to write down some possible topics .Thanks in advance!

This is a discussion to have with the professor.

You don't start by saying "I'm going to publish a paper." You start with a problem. You work on it. And if you find something novel that others in the scientific or engineering community would find interesting, then your write it up and submit it for publication.

Your professor will be able to recommend once you get closer to the point of publishing. A lot of time you present at some conferences before a peer reviewed major publication.
