How Does a New Scientist Navigate the Academic Community?

I am a new member here, and I do assure you I won't ask about homework, as I am no longer a student and I am a professor at a university in my home town. I may ask for a few pointers here and there, or for a book recommendation on a topic, though, and I may be able to help with a question or two if I have the time :)
