AI Thread Summary
A remarkable ancient mosaic was discovered in Lod, Israel, dating back to the 3rd century, showcasing intricate depictions of birds, fish, animals, plants, and Roman-era ships. Initially found during construction in 1996, the mosaic remained largely intact and was briefly exhibited to the public in 2009. Its vibrant colors and artwork are well-preserved, highlighting the skill involved in its creation. The mosaic was carefully removed from the ground using a technique that involved rolling it up like a carpet, ensuring minimal damage. This discovery emphasizes the potential for uncovering more historical treasures that may still lie hidden beneath the surface.

Mosaic in Lod Israel - way cool !

This mosaic from antiquity recently caught my attention.
At first they found the tail of a tiger and eventually found a near
complete mosaic floor depicting birds, fish, animals, plants and
Roman-era ships. It is about 1700 yrs old. (made in 3rd century).
What is amazing, the artwork and colors are remarkably intact.

First discovered in 1996 during construction on the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv highway in Lod (formerly Lydda), Israel, this large and impressive mosaic floor has only recently been uncovered and was displayed briefly in situ to the public in Israel during the summer of 2009.

Outstanding.

Heartbreaking to think how many incredible treasures we've lost.

Yes, it is sad how many of these pieces may have been lost or destroyed,
but with discoveries like this, there is hope we may yet find more.
(this piece was hiding only three feet below the ground).

This clip includes more detailed description and close-ups of the subject themes.

Amazing discovery.

Terrific! I'm amazed at their technique for handling the mosaic. They basically peeled it away from the soil, rolled it up and transported like a big heavy carpet - apparently with little (or no) damage?

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
