Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around how to find the magnification of a lens, particularly in cases where the focal length is unknown. Participants explore various methods and formulas related to magnification, as well as the relevance of the lens diameter.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks how to find the magnification of a lens without knowing its focal length.
  • Another participant suggests comparing the original object with its image to determine magnification.
  • A participant inquires about the formula for calculating magnification, specifically when the focal length is not known.
  • One participant provides the formula for magnification as M = SI / SO, where SI is the size of the image and SO is the size of the object.
  • A question is raised about finding magnification and focal length given that the lens is 4mm in diameter.
  • Another participant states that magnification and focal length do not depend on the diameter of the lens.
  • A further reply emphasizes that knowing the diameter does not provide necessary information to find the focal length.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the relevance of the lens diameter in determining magnification and focal length. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the methods to find magnification without the focal length.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not reached a consensus on the best approach to find magnification without knowing the focal length, and there are unresolved assumptions regarding the relationship between lens diameter and focal length.

how i can find the magnification of a lens??

how i can find the magnification of a lens if i don't know it's focal length??

Science news on Phys.org
Just compare an original object and its (real or imaginary) image.

what is the formula in finding the magnification?

what is the formula in finding the magnification if i don't know the focal length?

magnification M is

M = SI / SO

where

SI is size of image
SO is size of object

if the lens is 4mm in diameter how i can find the magnification and focal length?

magnification and focal length do NOT depend on diameter

That doesn't tell you anything you need to know to find the focal length.
