How Is a Power Recliner Wired for Multiple Functions?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the wiring and functionality of power recliners, specifically how multiple functions such as raising and lowering the footrest are controlled. Participants explore the electrical components and switch mechanisms involved in this process.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests there are three circuit states for the recliner: raising the footrest, lowering it, and an off state, speculating on the polarity reversal across the motor.
  • Another participant proposes the use of a cross-over switch, describing it as a two-pole switch with three positions (momentary on, off, momentary on) and explains how it can reverse polarity to control direction.
  • A similar point is reiterated by another participant, emphasizing the cross-over switch design and providing a link to a diagram for further clarification.
  • Some participants reference a previous discussion on the topic, indicating that similar questions have been raised before and that diagrams were created to aid understanding.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There appears to be some agreement on the use of a cross-over switch for controlling the motor, but the discussion includes multiple perspectives on the specifics of wiring and functionality, indicating that not all aspects are settled.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference diagrams and previous discussions, suggesting that there may be unresolved details regarding the wiring and operation of the switches that are not fully explored in this thread.

As far as I can tell there are three circuit states that control the recliner foot rest, raise it, lower it, and off. How is this wired, how does the switch function etc...? I assume the up and down switch flip the polarity across the motor, but that is all I can seem to reason out...

A cross-over switch.
A two pole switch, with three positions. (momentary on), off, (momentary on).
Centre is off. Cross-connect the two switches to reverse the polarity and direction.

Thank You!

We had that not so long ago, as I recall....

Oh, here it is o0)

I'm sure I blew it off thinking "When am I going to need that"!

I already made the diagrams to be sure I understand, but I see they match the other thread.
