claimed that a functioning but minimal vocabulary in English was on the order of 25000
words. In Navajo it was closer to 100000. So If I were to have a lot of education, my specialty vocabulary plus my "standard" English vocabulary is probably less than the average traditional Navajo speaker's command of the language.

IIRC the total vocabulary of English translations of the bible is only about 8500 words, even if you count inflected forms of words separately (i.e. stand, standing, stands, stood counts as four words, not one) and include all the names of people and places in the count.Containment said:Get your hands on a bible from the 18th century as imo that is one of the most common books around from both time periods.
This site says 14000. I don't know if they count inflected forms separately.AlephZero said:IIRC the total vocabulary of English translations of the bible is only about 8500 words, even if you count inflected forms of words separately (i.e. stand, standing, stands, stood counts as four words, not one) and include all the names of people and places in the count.

To determine the number of words used in everyday speech, researchers typically conduct large-scale studies where they record and transcribe conversations between individuals in various settings. They then analyze the transcripts to identify and count the unique words used.
The average number of words used in everyday speech can vary depending on factors such as age, education level, and cultural background. However, studies have shown that the average adult uses around 16,000-20,000 words in their daily conversations.
Research has found that there are slight differences in the number of words used by men and women in everyday speech, with women typically using more words than men. This could be due to various sociocultural factors and communication styles.
There is no definitive answer to this question as it is difficult to accurately measure the number of words used in everyday speech in different time periods. However, it is believed that with the increase in technology and social media, people may be using more words in their daily conversations compared to previous generations.
While the number of words used in everyday speech may vary, it is not necessarily an indicator of communication effectiveness. It is more important to focus on the clarity and effectiveness of the words used, rather than the quantity.
