How to Name a Compound with Both Double and Triple Bonds?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the correct naming conventions for organic compounds containing both double and triple bonds, specifically pentane and octane derivatives. The compound with a double bond at one end and a triple bond at the other is correctly named as pent-1-ene-4-yne. For octane with a double bond and a phenyl group, the proper naming convention prioritizes the phenyl group, resulting in x-phenyloctene without a dash. The consensus emphasizes that compounds with both types of bonds should adopt the -enyne suffix, with the double bond receiving the lowest numbering priority.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of IUPAC naming conventions for organic compounds
  • Familiarity with the structure of alkenes and alkynes
  • Knowledge of substituent priority in organic chemistry
  • Basic grasp of functional groups, specifically phenyl groups
NEXT STEPS
  • Study IUPAC naming rules for compounds with multiple functional groups
  • Learn about the properties and reactions of alkenes and alkynes
  • Explore examples of complex organic compound naming
  • Review the significance of substituent positioning in organic nomenclature
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, organic chemists, and anyone involved in the study or application of organic compound nomenclature.

organic chemistry help!

how do i name a pentane with a double bond on one end and triple bond on the other end?

pent-1-ene-4-yne?

if an octane has a double bond on one carbon and a phenyl group on another carbon . which should i start with first, the phenyl or the double bond?

Coumpounds with a double and triple bond take the ending -enyne, and the double bond receives lowest-numbering priority. Can you figure it out now?

Second question: name the phenyl first.

I think the secind one is x-phenyl-octene.I'm noit sure about the first, though. My first guess would be 4,1-methynpentene,but I'm not sure...

Daniel.

I do not think you are correct about the first one...let's let the OP take a shot at it. Keep the ending I mentioned earlier in mind.

The second one is correct except no dash b/w the two terms; should be x-phenyloctene, AFAIK.
