AI Thread Summary
Mariska Hargitay, known for her role in Law and Order: SVU, has garnered admiration for her advocacy work following her portrayal of a detective handling sexual abuse cases. She and her husband established a foundation to support victims of sexual assault, highlighting her commitment to real-world issues. However, some participants in the discussion express concerns that while her efforts are commendable, they may only address the symptoms of a larger problem rather than its root causes. There is a debate over whether social pressures or intrinsic human tendencies contribute to abuse, with suggestions that tackling these underlying issues could lead to more effective solutions. The conversation also touches on the importance of both immediate support for victims and long-term prevention strategies.

I LOVE this woman! Mariska rules.

When she started portraying a detective on Law and Order, SVU, who was assigned to sexual abuse cases, she got mail from victims of sexual assault/abuse. She and her husband started a foundation to help the victims of such abuse, in real-life. I LOVE this woman!

Yeah, I like her too but that's not addressing the root cause in my opinion and only doctoring the symptoms in what I believe is an ineffective, band-aid approach to the real problem. Why are they doing this in the first place? Is it intrinsic to the human genome to abuse or are social pressures partly to blame?

Personally I believe social influences have an influence and if we worked to eliminate those pressures, then I think we would have more of an impact reducing this problem then just caring for the abused.

If you followed the link, you would know that she is supporting efforts to stop the cause of the abuse. If you find yourself on a battlefield, it is admirable if you try to save as many of the wounded as possible. It's also admirable if you contribute to some efforts to prevent war, but that doesn't help the wounded right now, nor contribute to their survival or rehabilitation.

Where in that article does it mention anything about addressing the cause of the abuse? I'm not clicking on all those purple links too. You already stated she's addressing the cause. My apologies to her and you then.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
