Identifying a Sensor for Dark, X-Axis Motion Detection

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying a suitable sensor for detecting motion along the x-axis in dark environments. Participants explore various sensor types and their specifications, including range and detection height.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks a sensor that operates in darkness, scans only along the x-axis, and reacts to movement on a specified plane.
  • Another participant suggests a 2D scanner, questioning the feasibility and cost for a DIY project.
  • A participant clarifies the need for the sensor to detect movements at a height of 2m, specifically excluding lower movements, such as those from a cat.
  • One suggestion is to use a Passive InfraRed (PIR) sensor that can be configured to detect motion starting from 2m upwards.
  • Another participant proposes using a motion detector from a security system, recommending a trial-and-error approach to block parts of the detection window.
  • There is also a mention of IR beam systems that consist of a transmitter and receiver, which trigger an alarm when the beam is interrupted.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple competing views on the types of sensors that could be suitable for the described application, with no consensus reached on a single solution.

Contextual Notes

Participants express varying assumptions about the sensor's operational environment, detection height, and specific requirements for motion detection, which may influence the effectiveness of proposed solutions.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in sensor technology, motion detection applications, or DIY electronics projects may find this discussion relevant.

I need to indentify this type of sensor.

Need to work in dark.
Need to scan only in x axis. ( not to have angle in y-axis only in x ) Something like a plate.
And needs to react when movement is changed in that plate.

Can you post a sketch of what you want this sensor/scanner to do? And when you say "plate", do you maybe mean "plane"?

@berkeman
Yea plane :) My bad.

Well for example: if i put sensor 2m on my wall it need to detect movements on that height not lower. I am 2.1m and it detects me. My cat is .2m and it doesn't detect her.
Also need to have range: 3-5m minimum.

Can you use a Passive InfraRed (PIR) sensor that only sees from 2m up?

Passive InfraRed (PIR)

Interesting. Will search it.

You can use a motion detector from a security system, and block off parts of the window with tape on the inside. Trial and error, but relatively cheap. Most have no/nc contacts for triggering another device.

You can buy IR beam systems. They comprise an IR transmitter and receiver. Alarm triggered when the beam between the two is broken.
