Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding the integral of a specific function, with participants providing various approaches and resources. The scope includes mathematical reasoning and references to elliptic integrals.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Mathematical reasoning
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests assistance in finding the integral of a function, indicating a need for help with a specific mathematical problem.
  • Another participant suggests using Wolfram Alpha as a resource for solving the integral.
  • A different participant proposes using trigonometric identities, specifically \(\cos 2x = \cos^2 x - \sin^2 x\) and \(\cos^2 x/2 = \sqrt{\frac{1+\cos x}{2}}\), as potential methods for simplification.
  • Another post references a previous discussion on elliptic integrals, asserting that the integral in question is an elliptic integral and suggesting that it can be expressed as \(\sqrt{2}xE(x|0.5)\), where \(E(x)\) denotes an elliptic integral of the second kind.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the method to solve the integral, with multiple approaches and references to elliptic integrals being presented. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approach to take.

Contextual Notes

There may be limitations related to the assumptions about the function to be integrated, as well as the definitions and properties of elliptic integrals that are not fully explored in the discussion.

try using, \cos 2x=\cos^2x-\sin^2x

and \cos^2x/2=\sqrt{\frac{1+\cos x}{2}}

there was another post on this here: https://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=444905

but to reiterate, it is an elliptic integral. learn what complete elliptic integrals are before you attempt this problem. however, if you do know what elliptic integrals are, you would know that it would be sqrt(2)xE(x|0.5) where E(x) is an elliptic integral of the second kind.
