Is a 'Suicide Service' Ethical or Exploitative?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around a provocative video idea titled "Suicide Service," which depicts a fictional service offering to help individuals end their lives in exchange for their life savings. The concept includes a party meant to uplift participants, potentially leading them to reconsider their decision to die. Participants would experience a temporary escape from their despair, raising questions about the effectiveness of such an event in genuinely curing suicidal thoughts.Critics highlight the impracticality and ethical issues of the idea, noting that it could lead to legal troubles and financial ruin for the creator. They question the logic behind requiring life savings for a service that could be freely accessed through suicide. The conversation touches on themes of morality, the potential for character development, and the cinematic aspects of the plot, suggesting that while the idea may lack originality, it could still attract an audience if executed with engaging elements like humor, sex, and violence. Overall, the thread debates the viability of the concept as a film rather than a legitimate business venture.

Hello! I’ve got this idea for a video, which I’ve already very quickly performed (see video). The scene is about this lucrative little business run by a good-hearted fellow to makes his living out of the misery of others! To explain….

The ‘Suicide Service’ is a service that offers to help you ‘out’ in exchange for ALL your life savings (as you won’t be needing them). Before the suicidal person leaves this living realm, they must attend a party, yes the party of a lifetime (drunk gulped down, any food eaten because they don’t have a care for tomorrow, right), anyway, after this joyous revelry they come to their senses as they experience happiness, LIFE again and therefore have a change of heart – THEY WANT TO LIVE!

Well, worth pursuing?

Idea can be seen acted out, very roughly - http://rapidshare.de/files/1596105/suuuic.wmv.html

Congradulations, you just came up with the single most sue-able business idea in existence. Prepare to be bankrupted.

How likely is that to work, though--one party completely cures the would-be suicider's depression?

There was a movie made several years back with a plot that almost exactly mirrored your business plan here. I wish I could remember it. You didn't happen to rip it off, did you?

It would be even funnier if you killed them anyway. Sounds like something I would expect to see on MadTV.

I've seen several movies where they have sold there soul to the Devil, because there life sucked. Then given a life{for a short time} of of what ever they wished, only to change there mind at the end.

completely cure the world? I don't know, it's kind of limited in a few ways:
1. Only those with a life savings can go to them
2. After you decide to live your life savings suddenly dissappears
3. Why would someone want to give up their life savings to die when they can kill themselves for free and have their assets go to whoever they want?
4. It'll be sued into bankruptcy before they 'cure' even a single town.

It's not a business idea, it's a movie/video idea.

So, in the movie idea, has the person already handed over their life savings prior to the party? Are they left wanting to live but broke at the hands of a con-man who is somehow also heroic in saving these people's lives? A plot could develop from the inner conflict these people experience...do they consider their life savings a worthwhile price to pay for a second chance at life, or do they take their newly found desire to live and seek revenge on the con-artist? Is the con-artist reformed, or perhaps in an ironic twist, he is driven to suicide? Have other movies had similar ideas? Sure. But, lack of originality doesn't seem to stop movies from becoming blockbuster hits. Just be sure the party scene includes lots of sex and violence and well-known actresses and actors with hot bodies and it's a guaranteed hit.

It's a movie, it doesn't have to make sense. :-p

Griddles if you shoot them first.

It would never get started in the first place. At least not in the U.S. Somebody already tried something very similar recently. Would you want to end up like this guy?

In The Meaning of Life, by Monty Python, I think it was, organ donors discover that they must surrender their organs whether or not they're dead? You sign the donor card, and one day two guys show up at the door demanding your liver!
