SUMMARY

The net external work on a spring system, consisting of a block (A) and a spring attached to a wall, is solely determined by the work done by the hand pushing the block. The formula for work, W = F*D, applies where F is the force exerted by the hand and D is the distance moved. The wall does not perform any work on the spring since it remains stationary, resulting in zero work from the wall. Therefore, the net external work on the system is equivalent to the work done by the hand.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts such as work and energy
  • Familiarity with the formula for work, W = F*D
  • Knowledge of spring mechanics and force interactions
  • Concept of external forces in a mechanical system
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of work and energy in mechanical systems
  • Learn about spring constants and Hooke's Law
  • Explore the concept of equilibrium in static systems
  • Investigate the role of external forces in work calculations
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators teaching mechanics, and anyone interested in understanding work done in spring systems.

Quick question about net external work

Got a block (A) attach to Spring which attach to a Wall
Hand pushes A toward the wall which compress the Spring

So hand is doing positive work on A, W = F*D, work is whatever force by hand times distance..
But work done ON the spring BY the wall is zero right? wall didn't move, spring didn't move?

if zero for the wall, then the net external work on the system (block A + Spring) is just the work done by hand, the same W = F*D ?

That sounds right.

if zero for the wall, then the net external work on the system (block A + Spring) is just the work done by hand, the same W = F*D ?
Yes. If the wall hadn't pushed back, the hand would have had nothing to push against and could not have done any work here.
