Is Pursuing a Physics PhD at 40 Too Late?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the challenges and considerations of pursuing a PhD in physics later in life, particularly from the perspective of an individual in Chile with a Master's degree and a publication in a reputable journal. The individual expresses concerns about age-related discrimination in academia, despite a general discourse against it. They seek advice on gaining acceptance into a PhD program without a scholarship and inquire about part-time options, which seem uncommon. The conversation also touches on the timeline of completing a Master's degree and the individual's publication history, highlighting a four-year study period and a setback due to an accident. The individual has experience teaching various physics subjects, indicating a strong academic background.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
