AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the potential of harnessing atmospheric static electricity for energy generation, referencing a prototype developed in 2009 that demonstrated a consistent supply of atmospheric electricity. The team behind the prototype filed patents for technologies aimed at capturing this energy. However, skepticism surrounds the feasibility of this concept, with critics arguing that air's poor conductivity makes it impractical to harness static electricity effectively. Concerns are raised about the legitimacy of the company behind the technology, suggesting it may be a pump-and-dump scheme given its penny stock status and lack of revenue despite a high valuation. The overall sentiment leans toward caution, emphasizing the need for critical evaluation of the scientific claims associated with atmospheric electricity generation.

supposedly there is abundant electricity to be harnessed from converting static electricity in the atmosphere to the power grid (yeah right)

in 2009, the team developed a prototype to field test the functionality of capturing and converting energy from the atmosphere. During this testing phase, the team found that atmospheric electricity holds relatively constant, with no great fluctuations. This finding accelerated testing, in that the team could now be assured that the unlimited and continual supply of electricity warranted further exploration. To this end, patents were filed for an Atmospheric Static Electricity Generator and an Atmospheric Electrical Generator with Change of State.

trying to convince someone that this is just a pump and dump scheme (its a penny stock & the company has a $100M valuation & no revenue)

any thoughts on the supposed science here?

It seems absurd to me. Air is a terrible conductor, hence the reason lightning is allowed to build up inside storms, the charges are kept separated until the breakdown voltage of air is exceeded. As for harnessing this static electricity, either you discharge it, which results in no more static in that area, or you attract other charges to the ones in the atmosphere but keep them separated, which doesn't generate power.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
