AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the accuracy of a rainbow diagram provided by a teacher. Participants question the correctness of the angles depicted, particularly on the horizontal lines, and suggest that the order of colors in a double rainbow is not represented accurately. One contributor emphasizes the need to trace light rays within the water drop to identify errors in the diagram. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding both the angles and the color arrangement in rainbow formation. The accuracy of the diagram is crucial for a proper understanding of the physics behind rainbows.

Is rainbow figure correct ??

Homework Statement

It's a basic principle that why we see rainbow. I've described information in my attachment.
That figure is given by my teacher, he says to find out mistake in it.

My attempts

I think angles on horizontal lines are incorrect, will anyone explain how I tell it to my teacher ?

One thing - if you look up a picture of a rainbow - especially a double rainbow - you will notice that the order of colours is reversed in one compared to the other.

That feature is NOT shown in the diagram you included.

Try to trace the light rays - both the blue and the red ones- inside the water drop. You will see then what is wrong with your teacher's drawing.

Yes it is.

Which angle is really larger in the drawing of your teacher?

I multiplied the values first without the error limit. Got 19.38. rounded it off to 2 significant figures since the given data has 2 significant figures. So = 19. For error I used the above formula. It comes out about 1.48. Now my question is. Should I write the answer as 19±1.5 (rounding 1.48 to 2 significant figures) OR should I write it as 19±1. So in short, should the error have same number of significant figures as the mean value or should it have the same number of decimal places as...
Thread 'A cylinder connected to a hanging mass'
Let's declare that for the cylinder, mass = M = 10 kg Radius = R = 4 m For the wall and the floor, Friction coeff = ##\mu## = 0.5 For the hanging mass, mass = m = 11 kg First, we divide the force according to their respective plane (x and y thing, correct me if I'm wrong) and according to which, cylinder or the hanging mass, they're working on. Force on the hanging mass $$mg - T = ma$$ Force(Cylinder) on y $$N_f + f_w - Mg = 0$$ Force(Cylinder) on x $$T + f_f - N_w = Ma$$ There's also...
