Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the use of software for graphing functions and data on a PC, particularly in comparison to graphing calculators like the TI-89. Participants explore various software options and installation challenges.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses frustration with the TI-89's speed and accuracy for graphing and seeks PC alternatives.
  • Another participant suggests Gnuplot as a free and user-friendly option for plotting both 2D and 3D functions, along with data.
  • A participant mentions difficulty in finding a Windows executable for Gnuplot, having only downloaded the source code, and expresses a lack of time to compile it.
  • One user reports installing Maxima but is unable to find the option for graphing polar equations, only regular, parametric, and discrete options.
  • A link to a specific software package is provided by a participant, presumably for graphing purposes.
  • Another participant recommends downloading the Gnuplot Windows binary package for easier installation.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple software options and experiences, but there is no consensus on the best solution or resolution of installation issues.

Contextual Notes

Some participants face challenges related to software installation and specific functionalities, such as graphing polar equations, which remain unresolved.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals looking for software alternatives to graphing calculators, particularly those interested in free or open-source graphing tools.

Like, there are somethings that take too long to graph on ti-89, especially with accuracy. I would like to know how to use my PC to graph.

Thank you.

Gnuplot is free, easy and can plot 2d and 3d functions as well as data.
You could also use excel

I downloaded it, but only the source code. Can't find a windows-dumbed down .exe installation file. I don't have much time to compile and all that :(

I just installed Maxima. I can't find the option to graph polar equations, just regular, parametric, and discrete.

Just download the gnuplot gp43win32.zip package for the windows binary.
