Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the identification and functionality of a wireless traffic camera transmitter, with a focus on its potential role in outdoor lighting control systems and communication technologies. Participants explore the technical aspects and possible applications of the system observed in a specific location.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that the device may be a wireless traffic camera transmitter connected via coaxial cables to a camera or sensing device.
  • Another participant proposes that it could function as part of an outdoor lighting control system, potentially acting as a gateway between RF communication and local powerlines for managing light poles.
  • Some participants mention that the dual antennas might be intended for spatial diversity to mitigate multipath issues common in urban environments.
  • A participant encourages others to check the city website for information on new installations or trials related to the technology, referencing a similar case discussed in another thread.
  • There is a mention of a cable being retrofitted into the light sensor on top of the lamp, indicating modifications to existing infrastructure.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express multiple competing views regarding the purpose and functionality of the system, with no consensus reached on its exact role or identification.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the technology's purpose and functionality remain unverified, and the discussion relies on anecdotal observations without definitive evidence.

TL;DR
They have two small whips with loading coils and a box seeming to be something that may receive, amplify and retransmit something, I see no sensing devices and they are not specifically located in proximity to anything: neighborhoods, offices, intersections etc. Anyone have an idea what they are?

Wireless traffic camera transmitter? Looks like coaxial cables plugged into bottom.
See the camera or sensing device mounted on the light boom connected to the box by coax.

Might be part of an outdoor lighting control system. They could be gateways between RF and the local powerline in order to communicate with some number of light poles in the neighborhood. They could include other functions too, like the traffic monitoring suggested by @Klystron

The dual antennas would likely be for spatial diversity to help with the typical multipath issues in urban communication.

BTW, if you do a search at the city website, you may be able to see if they have installed some new system or are doing a trial with some new technology (like streetlight control). Which city/county did you see these in?

EDIT/ADD -- For example, see this thread for an example of something similar that I spotted and posted about, and @wirenut was able to identify what it was (a new city system):

There appears to be a cable retrofitted into the light sensor on top of the lamp.
