AI Thread Summary
When deciding between Physics and Chemistry for junior year of high school, taking both courses is recommended if possible. If a choice must be made, Physics is often favored, particularly in discussions among those with a background or interest in the subject. A solid grasp of basic physics concepts is beneficial for all students, regardless of their future academic pursuits, and can enhance critical thinking skills valuable in college and beyond.

I will be entering my junior year of high school and I'm debating on whether I should take Physics or Chemistry. I'm trying to take the course that will most benefit me for colleges out in New York. Could anyone recommend to me which one I should take? Thank you!

Given the option, take both.

If you can't for some reason, take physics. Note however that you're asking on a board populated by physics majors, professional physicists, and physics lovers in general. So we may be a little biased.

A good understanding of basic physics will do you a world of good, even if you're not planning to study the sciences further.

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
