AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on how to list forum threads with new posts within a specified time frame of 1 to 6 hours for users who are not logged in. While VB offers an option in the admin control panel, the ability to specify the exact time period is uncertain. Participants express skepticism about the usefulness of such a feature, noting that manually browsing sections may be more effective. One user seeks to filter threads specifically in the Physics and Mathematics categories without requiring a search keyword, highlighting limitations in the current PF Search feature. The conversation emphasizes the need for more tailored options for viewing recent posts in specific forum areas.

How do you list threads having new posts within the last x hours, where say 1 h ≤ x ≤ 6 h, which people who are not logged in can use?

Physics news on Phys.org
VB has a clickable option in the admincp for that but I can't remember if one can specify the time period.

I believe "recent" post in general are include i.e last 10 threads responded to.

I don't know how useful it would be though; for me I know it won't be very useful since I can manually go through sections that interest me.

It is more likely than not that the threads that show up might not interest you.

Can't you just use "today's posts" and stop reading down the list at a certain point?

cristo: Yes. But I forgot to mention, I wanted to be able to list the threads with new posts for a couple of forum areas, such as Physics and Mathematics only. I tried to do this using the PF Search feature, but I think it forces you to enter a search keyword; otherwise, it won't run. In this case, we don't want a search keyword.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
