Magnetic permeability Vs. Magnetic susceptibility

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Magnetic permeability and magnetic susceptibility are distinct yet related concepts in magnetism. Magnetic permeability, denoted as μ, measures a material's ability to conduct magnetic lines of force, while magnetic susceptibility, represented as χ, quantifies how much a material will become magnetized in an applied magnetic field. Both terms are essential for understanding material behavior in magnetic fields, and further exploration of their definitions and relationships is encouraged through reputable sources such as Wikipedia.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic magnetism concepts
  • Familiarity with magnetic field terminology
  • Knowledge of material properties related to magnetism
  • Ability to interpret scientific articles and definitions
NEXT STEPS
  • Read the Wikipedia articles on magnetic permeability and magnetic susceptibility
  • Explore the mathematical relationships between permeability and susceptibility
  • Investigate practical applications of these concepts in materials science
  • Study the effects of different materials on magnetic field behavior
USEFUL FOR

Students, educators, and professionals in physics, materials science, and engineering who seek to deepen their understanding of magnetic properties and their applications.

Hi I'm trying to find the difference between magnetic susceptibility and permeability? Do they both mean the same thing? If not, can anyone clear things up for me?

Hi there Keith

what have you discovered so far in your research on the subject ?Dave

I discovered I don't know magnetism well enough to even piece together a conceptual understanding so I'm going to go cry in a corner. lol

LOL. I think what Dave is asking is what did you learn from reading the two articles at wikipedia about this? They are different but semi-related quantities, as described by the articles.

Please read through those articles, and ask specific questions about the things that you do not understand in them.
