Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the challenges of operating a monophase AC motor from a fan, specifically focusing on understanding the wiring and achieving different speed settings. Participants explore the motor's functionality and potential control methods without reaching a definitive solution.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about the additional wires on the motor and seeks guidance on how to operate it.
  • Another participant inquires about the original controller for the motor and suggests that running it at high speed may help assess its torque capabilities.
  • A participant identifies the motor as a monophase induction motor based on the squirrel cage rotor design but admits to a lack of experience in working with such motors.
  • Concerns are raised regarding the safety of inexperienced individuals working with AC mains-powered devices.
  • A suggestion is made to close the thread due to safety concerns, with a recommendation for private messaging for further assistance.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying levels of experience and knowledge about AC motors, with some agreeing on the need for caution when working with mains power. However, there is no consensus on how to proceed with the motor's operation or wiring.

Contextual Notes

Participants acknowledge the potential risks associated with working on AC mains projects, particularly for those lacking experience. There are unresolved questions regarding the specific wiring and control methods for the motor.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in electrical engineering, particularly those exploring AC motors and their control mechanisms, may find this discussion relevant.

Hey, everyone,

I got this motor from my fan, I am trying to run it but there are a few more wires that I was expecting. Can someone please give me some light? What are all those wires and how to make ir run.

Hi Phellippe,

How much experience do you have working with AC Mains powered devices and motors? What are you hoping to do with this motor?

Hey, Thanks for your reply.
I don't have any experience with motors, I just have an idea about how it works, I've already done Electrical Machinery 1 and 2.
But I really don't know how to make it start from speed 0. I opened the stator and I guess its an monophase induction motor because the rotor looks like a squirrel cage rotor.
What I am planing to do? I am not sure yet, first i need to see it working to check how powerful it is

Hi Phellippe,

Is it possible to hook the motor back up to its original controller? Set it on high speed and it will develop all the torque it's capable of (not much). Then you can tell if it will have enough for whatever projects you have in mind. But if you can't hook it back up to the controller, post a reply and I'll try to figure something else out. Most of those motors like that are pretty similar and I'm familiar with them.

In general, we don't like inexperienced folks working with AC Mains projects. I need to close this thread, sorry. Perhaps @Jack of some trades can help you via PMs.
