Masters in Math | Chances for Physics Students | Applying to Europe

AI Thread Summary
A B.Tech graduate in Engineering Physics from an Indian Institute of Technology is exploring options for pursuing a master's degree in mathematics in Europe. The individual is uncertain about the necessity of internships before applying and is seeking advice on writing a statement of purpose (SOP) for programs in applied mathematics, statistics, or financial mathematics. Recommendations include targeting prestigious institutions like Cambridge or Oxford and preparing for necessary tests such as TOEFL and GRE, although GRE may not be required by all European universities. Internships, particularly at reputable organizations like the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, are suggested to strengthen applications. The discussion also touches on the importance of clarifying career goals post-graduation, as a master's in mathematics can lead to various roles such as quantitative analyst. Overall, pursuing a master's degree is seen as a viable option, with the possibility of applying later if the individual is uncertain about immediate higher studies.

You have B.Tech in Engineering Physics from IITB/D/M. In which year you are currently. If you looking in Europe Cambridge or Oxford are best choices.
Tests to Take from India, TOEFL/IELTS, GRE(General) & GRE Mathematics. For Internship look at Tata Institute of Fundamentals Research.(tifr.res.in) or visit internshala.com
Internships or IMO medals are a great help in International School applications.
You can talk to anothers who applying on http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/india/

Any other queries are welcomed.

Thanx for the reply . I have given the TOEFL but not the GRE as european univeristies generally don't need gre scores. i was thinking about the internship because i am not sure whether i want to pursue higher studies. I am very much interested in this field but i am not considering applying for Phd so i don't want to get stuck after my masters in mathematics. Whats your opinion about masters in mathematics?? anyone you
know..

ThankYou in advance

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
