Men: How Would You React to Being Contacted Out of the Blue?

The discussion centers around the reactions of individuals when contacted unexpectedly by a woman expressing admiration for them. Initial responses include feelings of flattery mixed with suspicion, particularly regarding how the woman obtained their email address. Public figures note they often receive such messages, which can feel overwhelming or even creepy, depending on the approach and content of the email. Many participants agree that the context and tone of the message significantly influence their reactions; a well-crafted email referencing shared interests or work is more likely to be welcomed than a vague compliment. Some express that if they were single, they might be more open to engaging, while others emphasize discomfort, especially if the message is overly focused on physical attraction. The conversation also touches on the challenges of online communication, where initial impressions can be easily misinterpreted. Ultimately, there is a consensus that while such outreach can be flattering, it often requires careful consideration of how to approach the recipient to avoid coming off as strange or overly forward.

How would you feel about a woman e-mailing you with no prior contact?

Ok, who would like me to stalk them? I've got to find something to take my mind off the pain. My stalking is limited to online only.

I'm open to requests. Of course, they'll have to listen to me whine. Nothing comes free.

So, you think it's more acceptable to older people than to young people?

Of course young people have facebook and myspace, and many other similar online places where they can harmlessly contact each other. Us "old" folks are left to our own devices.

Everyone my age at work is married, gay or young Earth creationists. I'm too old to be cruising bars. I'm too young to be put in a retirement home.

I can sit at home and twiddle my thumbs, or take a chance.

Yes, I am saying it might be more acceptable to older people. For someone in my generation to be contacted out of the clear blue by a strange woman I have never met with a picture and a letter would instantly trigger thoughts of crazy stalkers. This is possibly a symptom of growing up in a society where all strangers are labeled as evildoers.

I did not, however, say there was anything wrong with you doing this. In fact, I would encourage you to go through with it. You have everyone here supporting you, why aren't you taking the chance already?

Because so many have now gotten me to think I'd be some kind of psycho if I did. :frown:

I guess if I worded the question as Mathwonk put it "should i email a guy I think is handsome and interesting?" it would have come across differently.

Oh c'mon, Look at the poll—7 negative, and I'm sure we don't have to worry about your looks and personality.

should I e-mail a guy I think is handsome and interesting?

Yes!
Should I send him the poll results? :-p Less than half of the men surveyed say I'm crazy to be e-mailing you.

Email him Evo. Really, I think you should. Ask him a few things about his work, or I saw one interview where he lists a bunch of pop sci books he likes. You could read one of those and make a comment about it. Then ask something a little more personal, so you can hopefully diverge from just talking about his work. Just send an email that's engaging, so he'll want to respond. Be a little bit funny, and don't send a picture yet. Just do it.

And risk him thinking she's crazy? Are you crazy? What if he doesn't respond? What if he does & registers on PF & they hit it off & he decides to come visit but there are terrorists on the plane & he dies & she's responsible for the loss of such a brilliant man? Does she want that on her head? How will she live through the ice weasels? I'm not sure I could.
