Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around a newly created HTML table of the nuclides, which allows users to filter the display of nuclides based on specific criteria, such as even, odd, or every fourth nuclide. Participants explore the features of this table, including its ability to represent stability through color coding and the axes options for neutrons and protons.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes the new HTML table of the nuclides and its filtering capabilities, which aim to highlight patterns in the data.
  • Another participant mentions a different chart from the National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC), suggesting it is useful.
  • A participant expresses appreciation for the NNDC chart but notes technical issues with the new table, such as zooming problems in specific browsers.
  • There is a query about the representation of a specific band of elements from Polonium through Actinium, indicating interest in the periodic table's layout.
  • Another participant shares links to additional views of the periodic table, suggesting further resources for exploration.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying opinions on the utility and functionality of the new HTML table and the NNDC chart, with some appreciating the new features while others point out technical issues. The discussion includes questions about specific elements, indicating a lack of consensus on certain aspects.

Contextual Notes

Some participants mention technical limitations and browser compatibility issues with the new table, which may affect user experience. There is also a lack of clarity regarding the specific representation of certain elements in the periodic table.

I've created a new html table of the nuclides
that allows you to only show even, odd or every 4th nuclide
making it easier to see patterns in the overall chart.
See the image below.

The horizontal axis can be either 'the number of neutrons'
or 'the number of neutrons minus the number of protons'.
This also makes it easier to see patterns in the overall chart.

It also colors each nuclide according to how stable it is.

Here is the link:

I tried to post this in the Math & Science Learning Materials section but I can't post there.

Do you know the http://www.nndc.bnl.gov/chart/ chart ?
It's pretty handy !

No, I didnt.
Thats a really nice chart

That's very cool. But buggy. Wil not zoom at all in FF3.6, flaky navigation in IE8.

In all my years, I've never seen the periodic table displayed this way. What is the band from Polonium through Actinium?

Here are two new views of the periodic table. More information is at http://www.periodic-table.net" .
