Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around issues with LaTeX rendering in forum posts, specifically whether the problem lies with the forum itself or individual browser configurations. Participants explore various browsers and their experiences with LaTeX display, touching on both technical and user experience aspects.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants report that LaTeX is not displaying correctly, suggesting it may be a browser issue.
  • One user mentions that MathJax appears not to be loading or running, specifically in Firefox 14.0.1.
  • Another participant states they cannot access the MathJax menu because LaTeX is displayed as plain text.
  • Some users suggest that MathJax works fine in other browsers like Chrome, IE, and Opera.
  • A participant notes that the MathJax website is not loading, indicating potential server issues.
  • There are reports of MathJax being slow to render in Internet Explorer.
  • Several users confirm that MathJax functionality varies across different browsers and versions, with some experiencing it working while others do not.
  • One participant mentions a potential issue with MathJax being hosted on GoDaddy, referencing an external news article about server problems.
  • Later posts indicate that MathJax may have resumed normal functionality for some users, but not universally.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that there are issues with LaTeX rendering, but there is no consensus on whether the problem is specific to certain browsers or a broader issue with the forum or MathJax itself. Multiple competing views remain regarding the functionality across different platforms.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include varying browser versions and configurations, as well as potential external server issues affecting MathJax loading. Some participants have different experiences based on their specific setups.

As the current time, the LaTex in forum posts isn't displaying for me. Is this a forum problem or (more likely) just a problem with my browser?

Physics news on Phys.org
I'm having the same issue. It appears MathJax is not loading (or at least not running).

I'm using Firefox 14.0.1. (14? Really?)

Firefox 12.0 under Fedora Core 17 Linux.

I understand how to change the math renderer by clicking on a LaTex image and using the pop-up menu. However, I don't get the menu because I get no LaTex image to click on. The LaTex, including the itex tags, is just displayed as if it were text - in all posts, not just mine.

I've sent a support notice to MathJax. It seems to be working fine with Chrome, IE and Opera. For the meantime I would suggest using one of those.

It's not working in Safari and Firefox here. Based on what digoff said, I'd guess it might work if you have a cached copy of MathJax.

EDIT: Actually, the MathJax website loads fine here, but the script itself doesn't load.
