Optics Research: Focus Light to <5mm, Cheap Lens Solutions

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the need for a cost-effective lens solution to focus a diverging LED array light source to a beam width of less than 5mm for optical trapping imaging on a CCD camera. The user requires a lens configuration that fits within a 10cm space and has a short focal length of less than 10cm. Participants seek clarification on the type of lens required and the potential sources for purchasing such lenses.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of optical trapping techniques
  • Familiarity with LED array light sources
  • Knowledge of lens types and their focal lengths
  • Basic principles of beam focusing and optics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research suitable lens types for focusing LED light, such as aspheric lenses
  • Explore online retailers for affordable optical lenses
  • Learn about optical trapping setups and their requirements
  • Investigate the use of diffusers in conjunction with lenses for beam shaping
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for students, researchers, and hobbyists involved in optics, particularly those working with LED light sources and optical trapping applications.

Greetings,

I am a student doing research and I have a diverging LED array light source outfitted with a diffuser and I need it to focus to a beam width of smaller than 5mm in order to image a optical trapping on a CCD camera. My apparatus has about 10cm of space underneath it, so I have to be able to fit my light source and whatever lens configuration in that 10 cm distance. Basically, I need a cheap lens solution in order to focus as much light as possible in a very small beam with a short focal length (<10cm). Any suggestions?

Are you asking what type of lens you need, or are you asking where you can purchase the lens you need?

Welcome to the PF.

What is a "diverging LED array light source"? Can you Upload a sketch of your setup?
