Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the generation of electricity and magnetic fields through the flow of mercury or salt water in a copper tube. Participants explore the mechanisms involved, potential outcomes, and practical considerations related to this concept.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that the process is similar to how a battery operates.
  • Another participant questions whether this principle applies to both mercury and salt water, and inquires about the magnitude of the magnetic field at a specific flow rate.
  • A different participant proposes an experimental approach to determine the outcomes.
  • Concerns are raised about the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the proposed method.
  • One participant argues that while mercury or salt water is conductive, the lack of movement in a magnetic field, along with the copper tube also being conductive, may not generate electrical current or a magnetic field.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the effectiveness of the proposed method for generating electricity and magnetic fields, with no consensus reached on the validity of the claims made.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved questions regarding the assumptions about the flow rates needed to produce noticeable changes in output and the specific conditions under which electricity and magnetic fields might be generated.

How does passing mercury, salt water, etc thought a copper tube create electricity? and dose it create a magnetic field?

Welcome to PF;
... pretty much same way a battery works.

is this true of mercury or just salt water and how magnitudinous is the magnetic field at flow rate X? (Im not sure what increment would make a noticeable change in output?)

Why not try it and see?

Im hoping there's a more cost effective approach.

... of doing what?
