@andrewkirk can you provide an example here of the issue you have found?

I expect ##h=x## and ##y=k.## and what I get to see is h=xh=xh=x and y=ky=ky=k.

It's not misbehaving this morning. The following tests work OK. If it happens again I'll not fix the post where it happens, and link to it. The problem I was having is the same as @BvU has reported just above.
------------------------------------------------------
Here is a MathJax ##a##, implemented by code:
Code:
##e##
.

EDIT:The above was a fresh post. Now I will add another MathJax ##e##.

Here is some math format MathJax:

$$e^{i\pi}=0$$

EDIT2: some more MathJax ##1+1=2##.
$$e\times 0 = 0$$

This might not be a behavior that is specific to PF5. Prior to the recent change, if you Quoted some text with MathJax in it, the text pasted into the reply looked like what is shown above. My workaround was to Quote only the part up to the MathJax, and then click the Edit button to copy the rest of the text verbatim. I would then add in the quoted text, and append/paste the following MathJax text.

Yes, in the linked post it renders just fine. But in the quote it goes wrong

That's because you are a Mentor. The plebes can't edit other's posts .

The workaround is to click the Reply button, which quotes the entire post correctly, and work with that.

It's wrapped in a code tag where it won't render

Strange -- when 'reply' is used, it's also enclosed, but it does render:
