AI Thread Summary
Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church have sparked outrage by declaring that Norway must "repent or perish" following the tragic events involving Anders Breivik, whom they claim is a punishment from God for the country's acceptance of homosexuality. They have threatened to picket the funerals of victims, drawing condemnation for exploiting a national tragedy for publicity. Participants in the discussion express anger towards the church's actions, with some suggesting extreme measures to prevent their protests, while others emphasize the importance of ignoring such hate groups to diminish their influence. Concerns are raised about the legality of inciting violence, with a mention of the church's potential decline due to defections highlighted in a documentary by Louis Theroux. Overall, the conversation reflects a strong condemnation of the Westboro Baptist Church's tactics and ideology.

Phelps: "Norway must repent or perish!"

It was, I guess, inevitable that Fred Phelps and the Westboro baptist Church stooped to an even more low than before:
Anders Breivik is the punishment of God over the fagluvin' Norwegians, and they threaten to picket the funerals of our dead teenagers:

I'm sorry our nation's nut-case "church" is using your nation's tragic loss to bring attention to themselves. I wish I could send you a few thousand Hell's Angels bikers to keep Phelps and his idiots at bay.

Alas, our polar bears aren't very useful in the late summer heat..:frown:

I'm just amazed that a family of tax evading hate mongers gets to pretend they are a church and get away with this kind of thing.

IMO.

And no, I don't want to start an off topic debate on the freedom of religion, 1st ammemdment, etc... Sometimes there are bad people with bad intentions, IMO, and leave it at that.

the best thing you can do is ignore them. they do it for the publicity.

Agreed.

Or blow the church up. I don't think anyone would mind.

yeah, you might want to edit that post

Do you have to let them into the country? I think any sovereign state can block the entry of anyone it wishes if they have no legal status in the country (citizen, landed immigrant, treaty obligations, etc).

Or let them in and charge them with some crime that carries the maximum penalty. 21 years without those nut-cases would be wonderful!

When some day Rev. Phelps meets his maker, I can't help but wonder if it will be something like http://www.theonion.com/articles/hijackers-surprised-to-find-selves-in-hell,1445/".

Just lock them in Breivik's cell. That ought to be an interesting watch.

Their existence makes me angry, violent, and willing to beat up a lot of people.

Isn't it illegal to incite violence? Because I'm being incited a lot right now.

On the plus side it sounds like the church is disintegrating. Louis Theroux, who did an earlier documentary about the WBC, followed up after a lot of defections.

Warning, documentary contains the language you expect from Westboro, God hates this, god hates that, etc.
