AI Thread Summary
An experiment is proposed to investigate how the depth of penetration of pellets into absorbent material varies with their speed. The speed can be measured using light gates and an electronic timer, while depth can be assessed with a ruler. To vary the speed of the pellets, methods such as adjusting the power supply or using thin aluminum foil to create drag are suggested. Safety precautions include wearing protective eyewear and ensuring a safe distance from the firing line. The discussion highlights the need for clarity on experimental design as exams approach.

Homework Statement

An air rifle can be used to fire small metal pellets which have a speed of about 150m/s on leaving the rifle. When an absorbent material is placed some distance from the rifle, the pellets are observed to penetrate the material to a depth of 3 to 4 cm.

Design an experiment to investigate how the depth of penetration varies with the speed of the pellet with a diagram and describing how

a) the speed of the pellets may be measured
b)The depth of penetration into the absorbent material may be measured
c)the speed of the pellets may be changed ( assuming the pellets leave the rifle with a fixed speed.)
d)any safety precautions for experiment

The foll. is available together with standard college lab equipment:
mounted air rifle
connecting wires
stopwatch
power supply unit
light gates
electronic timer
rule
sheets of absorbent material (eg cork)
thin aluminum foil

i guess the light pipes can be used to measure the speed of the bullet but how do you vary the speed?
can you use the foil to slow the bullet?

There are at least two other ways to vary the speed of the bullet hitting the target. One involves the equation TE = PE + KE. What do you think that method would be? And does it suggest another method?

I multiplied the values first without the error limit. Got 19.38. rounded it off to 2 significant figures since the given data has 2 significant figures. So = 19. For error I used the above formula. It comes out about 1.48. Now my question is. Should I write the answer as 19±1.5 (rounding 1.48 to 2 significant figures) OR should I write it as 19±1. So in short, should the error have same number of significant figures as the mean value or should it have the same number of decimal places as...
Thread 'A cylinder connected to a hanging mass'
Let's declare that for the cylinder, mass = M = 10 kg Radius = R = 4 m For the wall and the floor, Friction coeff = ##\mu## = 0.5 For the hanging mass, mass = m = 11 kg First, we divide the force according to their respective plane (x and y thing, correct me if I'm wrong) and according to which, cylinder or the hanging mass, they're working on. Force on the hanging mass $$mg - T = ma$$ Force(Cylinder) on y $$N_f + f_w - Mg = 0$$ Force(Cylinder) on x $$T + f_f - N_w = Ma$$ There's also...
