Please welcome another imaginary friend

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the introduction of an imaginary friend, DrPaleo, a fictional Prehistoric Archaeologist known for his strong stance against unsubstantiated theories in archaeology. He has been humorously compared to Brad Pitt's character in "Fight Club" due to his feisty nature in debates about the arrival of the first humans in North America, which is estimated to be around 13,000 years ago. Participants engage in light-hearted banter about imaginary friends and the nature of reality versus imagination, while also expressing excitement about DrPaleo's expertise and potential contributions to discussions on archaeology. The conversation touches on serious topics such as the "overkill hypothesis," which suggests that early humans contributed to the extinction of large mammals in North America, and the ongoing debates regarding the timing and evidence of human presence in the Americas. Overall, the thread blends humor with scholarly interest, inviting further exploration of archaeological topics.

Please welcome another imaginary friend!

This time, he's a renowned Prehistoric Archaelogist, also considered America's most hated Archaeologist because he stands up against unfounded personal theories (fits right in here).

He was compared (in a 1999 article in Scientific American) to Brad Pitt in "Fight Club". He has a book out with Cambridge University Press and is working on publishing his second, and is very well known and regarded in archaelogic circles. He can be found in National Geographic as well as many peer reviewed journals.

Let's all give a warm welcome to DrPaleo.

He is currently on a dig, but promises to say hi. Really. He promised. :blushing: I'm not making him up. :frown:

He explained it to me, but I'm too tired to remember. (surgery, meds and all that) Perhaps he will explain. Perhaps a bit headstrong? :-p

I did not mean to offend, neither did I mean to spoil Fight club to anyone who has not seen it. I look forward to read from such an interesting new member of PF ! I don't know if we already have an archaeologist.

Welcome DrPaleo! What type of fish do you like? Did Evo explain this to you yet?

Why did I type Bread instead of Brad? Is he really imaginary in fight club? I never noticed.

Cool - what's she doing there? My (actual) parents lived in that part of the world for a while - in Kyrgyzstan. They loved it (except the food - too much horse meat ). The mountains are beautiful!

*Meanwhile, back in the thread...*

My hubby's best friend is an archeologist...if he and his archeologist pals are representative of the breed, they tend to be a bit strange.

He'll fit right in here  .

I think "virtual" refers to something which exists in reality but does not have actual physical support, whether "imaginary" is not real.

Never mind, I was confusing with a cartoon I saw the other day

She did not go for the eclipse, since she did not even notice...
Anyway, it does not appear to be too close to the Afghanistan border, neither to Pakistan, nor China...

His publisher has accepted the new title for his second book.

The original tiltle was something like "The Great Megafauna Extinction". The publisher thought it was too highbrow and wanted something the average American would understand.

Ok, so I thought "megafauna - faun- BAMBI!

I suggested "The Killing of MEGA-BAMBI!

I guess that was shot down. :frown:

Would the great mega fauna extinction be a subject for an archeologist? Then it would be predictable that the role of homo sapiens is going to be highlighted. However the http://www.amnh.org/science/biodiversity/extinction/Day1/bytes/MartinPres.html has been challenged rather convincingly.

Also the "great megafauna extinction" would need to cover world wide area between 40,000 and 6000 before present (BP), while the alleged great Clovis murdering was to be confined to North America between http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/315/5815/1122. This calibrates with INTCAL04 to ~12,950 to ~12,830 calendar year. So not 250 years but a mere 120 years.

Climate wise this period is the true mystery interval as it is highly ambigous if it is either the start of the Younger Dryas or if it preceeded the Younger Dryas (which I'm convinced of). This seems to be the real cold and soaking wet period attributed to the Younger Dryas. In reality it seemed that the Younger Dryas reversed suddenly to super aridity around 12,680 Calendar years BP, which elicited several authors to propose a split up of the Younger dryas in two parts. All in all, probably not something you would like to encounter, as it might have lead to your extinction.

The steep gradient of the radio carbon dating is probably related to anomalous atmosphere - ocean interaction which dovetailes with several oceanic observations of carbon dating basin age shifts. So it would be defendable to assume that the oceans played a major role in these mysteries.

It was also a period of increased volcanic activity in Iceland and otherwise dormant volcanic areas in Europe (Eifel in Germany and Massif Central in France)

What am I doing here? To early to fight I guess. Let's discuss this later.

Hello all. I am not just another one of Evo's giant rabbits! The comparison to Brad Pitt was due to my supposed no hold barred feistiness in the dispute over exactly when the Indians' ancestors arrived here (about 13,000 years ago, IMHO). I have not been meek in my criticism of phony evidence for an earlier human presence. However, the hyper-aggressive caricature in "Science" was a bit of an exaggeration.

That thing doesn't work!
I knew that's real because I advanced searched (before your post and now too) and entered "drpaleo" in user name and he showed up in the drop down list. Imaginary people don't show up. Even "drpaulbright" is not in the list ...
