Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding a user-friendly, free program to solve a system of equations with 6 variables and 6 equations. The focus includes suggestions for tools that do not require programming skills.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests a free, easy-to-use program for solving a system of equations with 6 variables and 6 equations.
  • Another participant suggests using a TI-83 calculator for solving the equations.
  • A different participant notes that a TI-83 is suitable for linear equations but recommends Computer Algebra Software for non-linear equations, mentioning Sage as a reasonably effective option.
  • A participant confirms they used a TI-83 for their problem.
  • Another option proposed is using Excel, specifically its matrix functions MMULT and MINVERSE, for smaller problems.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple suggestions for solving the problem, indicating a lack of consensus on a single best solution. Different tools are proposed based on the nature of the equations (linear vs. non-linear) and user preferences.

Contextual Notes

There is an implicit assumption that the equations in question may vary in complexity, which affects the choice of tools suggested. The discussion does not resolve the effectiveness of each proposed solution for all scenarios.

I need a easy-to-use (i.e. no programming, if possible) program that's free that can solve a system of equations with 6 variables and 6 equations. Any suggestions?

yea a ti83

A TI83 calcultor will do the job if the equations are linear, but otherwise you will need to use a Computer Algebra Software, of which there is no excellent free package, although sage could do reasonably at the job you are asking about.

Thanks for the replies. I used a TI-83.

Another option for a small problem like this is Excel. You can used the matrix functions MMULT and MINVERSE.
