Photo of me after a four mile run at minus 32 deg F this morning. Frosty on the outside, warm on the inside. The ice buildup on my eyelashes is only a problem when it gets heavy enough to pull my eyes shut. Cell phone camera.

After a few minutes of exposure to the room, the frost started to melt so I closed the window and let it re-freeze:

I've used intercom systems between streetbikes and even between me and my passenger on a streetbike (full face helmets with lots of wind noise), but I can't imagine why you would need an intercom between two MTB riders feet apart at MTB speeds. Just yell!! Lordy.

Winter Storm Fern fortunately blew through here with less effect than many other places in the southeast US. We had about an inch of sleet on Sunday, followed by freezing rain which produced maybe 0.25" of ice coating everything by early Monday morning. It all mostly melted during the morning and afternoon, and caused no power outages here.

More solid water photos, all using 55mm MicroNikkor:

I find the clear transitions between linear and curvilinear dedritic growth fascinating- all I know about dendrites is what I followed of Martin Glicksman's spaceflight experiments using succinonitrile, and I don't recall ever seeing curved dendrites.

Next- backlit icicles:

Getting the images to look like what I was seeing with my eyes was more difficult than expected. Because the highlights (sunstars) aren't properly captured by the built-in exposure meter, initially the images were really overexposed. I had to adjust the EV (exposure compensation setting) to 'expose for the highlights'. Stopping down the (6-sided) aperture to f/16 creates all the sunstars.

(FWIW, the specific value was (IIRC) +3.7, but that number needs a LOT of context. To put that specific number for my specific lens in context, when set EV +3.7 at f/16, I was decreasing the exposure meter by 3 stops)

The middle image shows a lot of cool (to me) optical effects: Along the left edge is a column of out-of-focus aperture stops. Flanking the middle icicle are columns of spots created by (partial) reflections of the sunstars off of an intervening glass pane, and the intensity has been decreased enough so to see an optical effect of dispersion (rainbows).

Had jury duty yesterday. Fortunately, it was only about a block and a half from a location I had planned to be later that day anyway. (I wasn't called to sit on a trial, btw.) I did miss the first half of the protest event though.

Figure 1. "San Diego morning glow." Leica 28mm Summicron-M ASPH. I've been interested in this vantage point for quite a while now. It's in between the "Hall of Justice" and the San Diego Superior Court building. Jury duty gave me the perfect excuse/motivation to get up there and check it out. I plan to come back to this location at different times of year (to get the sun in the right location) and also come back with a tilt lens (this should be a good location for a tilt lens). It's a mild hassle to get to though; you need to go through security.

I particularly liked photo 2; with some graphics edits I think it could become a really nice abstract wallpaper. Really nice forms in the photo.

Sidenote:

I haven't been shooting lately, because it's been very cold and very cloudy too.
Times like these can be really dull in Scandinavia. Really dull.
I've been spending my time setting up mini PCs (Beelinks) and playing music.

The snow and cold have been unrelenting here as well- the landscape is bleak and desolate :)

15mm f/2.8 shot @ f/11, 10s auto ISO. The camera is about 2 feet off the ground and 1 meter from the stop sign. Yes, I mixed units... A crop from the center of this image turned out to be much better than the original:

a car drove by during the exposure- the headlights lit the ground (and the whitish streak), tail-lights are the red streaks.

Figure 13. "Self reflection in shop window #1." Leica 35mm Summilux-M ASPH. I'm the one in the cowboy hat with the camera. The window reflection may have distorted my features somewhat.

Figure 14. "Self reflection in shop window #2." Leica 35mm Summilux-M ASPH. I stepped back a bit for this shot. (Again, I'm the one in the cowboy hat.) I ate a sandwich and fries for lunch here. The shop not only sells food and drink, but suprisingly also sells vinyl records. My digital rangefinder camera felt right at home.

I'm suprised I was able to nail critical focus on this one. It's quite difficult to focus correctly on close moving puppies. It might have been as much luck as it was skill (I still have a lot of practicing to do; I'm still learning).

Some experimental shots taken of a street spotlight at night...
...this was handheld, and it would definitely have been better if I used a tripod, but I had not one with me at the time... maybe I will try it again with a tripod instead....
