AI Thread Summary
The Sci Fi Channel has announced a movie adaptation of Larry Niven's "Ringworld," which is celebrated as a favorite among fans of science fiction literature. There is also interest in adapting Jennings' "Aztec" into a miniseries, reflecting a desire for more adaptations of classic sci-fi works. The discussion touches on the idea that "Ringworld" shares thematic similarities with "The Wizard of Oz," a claim that Niven has not denied, sparking debate about the originality of plots in literature. Additionally, there is a playful suggestion about synchronizing Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" with "Ringworld," indicating a cultural crossover interest among fans.

Just announced that the Sci Fi Channel is making a movie based on Niven's Ringworld - one of my all time favorite sci fi books. Yay!

I think Jenning's Aztec would make a great miniseries as well. I always expected to see this happen but oh well, at least they finally got around to Ringworld.

Anyone ever read The Shottle Bop?

Somebody once claimed that the plot of Ringworld is just "The Wizard of Oz" in disguise, with detailed analysis of all the main characters. And Niven didn't deny it!

Fair enough. Well, I've read Harry Potter in a dozen different books too, but I still enjoyed it.

WHAT! That sneeky devil.

Does this mean that Dark Side of the Moon goes with Ringworld as well? Just start the music when you see the copyright?

Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
