AI Thread Summary
A third-year computer science student in India expresses a desire to transition from their current field to mechanical engineering, which they have always wanted to pursue. They are considering an MBA as an alternative, finding business case studies interesting, but are uncertain about their path forward. The discussion highlights that the suitability of an MBA depends on the candidate's goals and the type of program they aim for, noting that top MBA programs often require significant work experience and may not be accessible without it. It emphasizes the importance of clarifying career aspirations and building relevant experience before pursuing an MBA, as well as the necessity of preparing for entrance exams like the CAT and GMAT. The conversation underscores that transitioning fields can be challenging and requires careful planning and effort.

I think the answer you'll get varies a lot with the type of school you're looking at and what your expectations are from an MBA. Top programs in the US generally require 3+ years of work experience before they will consider most candidates. The types of jobs held by MBAs also vary widely with the school attended. Top 3ish schools will have median graduating salaries in the $150k range with salaries quickly dropping off to sub-100k levels and down to below undergrad engineering pay levels.

Without experience or a relevant undergrad degree it may or may not be very difficult to use the MBA to change fields. This is a very difficult question to answer generally.

First, figure out what you really want to do in life and then figure out what you need to do to achieve that goal. MBA may or may not be necessary. There may also be more steps to take before you reach the MBA part, like building a solid work experience profile and background for your MBA application, as well as getting a high GMAT, etc. Nothing is easy in life, whichever path you choose.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
