SiO2, or silicon dioxide, is a compound consisting of silicon and oxygen, commonly known as silica. It is primarily found in nature as sand and is a key component in glass production. In the semiconductor industry, SiO2 serves as an essential insulating oxide barrier for silicon-based devices. The compound can be created through various chemical processes, including oxidation of silicon. Understanding SiO2 is crucial for applications in materials science and electronics.

SiO2 is silicon dioxide (just as CO2 is carbon dioxide) and is more commonly known as silica, which in the form of a network solid is the primary constituent of sand and glass. http://www.the-piedpiper.co.uk/th13(a).htm

In the semiconductor industry, SiO2 is important as the insulating oxide barrier that is grown over a silicon-based device.
