Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around modeling magnetic fields in a core with an air gap, exploring various software options for simulation, including Comsol, FEMM, and others. Participants share their experiences and seek recommendations for easier alternatives, particularly for Mac users.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses difficulty with Comsol's documentation and considers alternatives like FEMM, but notes its Windows-only availability.
  • Another participant shares links to a Quora discussion and mentions additional software options, including MaxFem and Vizimag.
  • A different participant suggests that modeling in Comsol should be feasible and provides links to relevant tutorials as potential resources.
  • Another participant points out the existence of similar discussions for further exploration.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best software solution, as multiple competing views and suggestions for modeling tools remain present.

Contextual Notes

Some limitations include the varying levels of familiarity with different software packages and the specific requirements for modeling magnetic fields, which may not be fully addressed in the shared resources.

Hi I am looking around for some way to model magnetic fields through a simple core with an air gap similar to this image :

I was thinking Comsol... but Comsol is so hard to figure out, their documentation is terrible... I was looking at FEMM, but its only on windows. Does anyone know how to model this in comsol, or know a easier way to do it on mac ? Otherwise... would I be better off buying a windows machine and using Solidworks or FEMM or something else?
