Solve Structural Mechanics Qs 3 & 6 on PDF Files

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on solving structural mechanics questions 3 and 6 from provided PDF files. Participants emphasize that direct solutions won't be provided, but sharing work can lead to constructive feedback. For question 6, understanding the derivation of the horizontal shear stress equation is crucial, and adaptations may be necessary based on unit requirements. Question 3 is noted as ambiguous, potentially referring to a section or a punching shear scenario. Engaging with the problem's context is essential for effective resolution.

Hi darius2626, welcome to PF. People won't solve problems for you here, but if you show your work, you'll likely get helpful tips.

For question 6, there is a formula, but I would recommend that you go back to the derivation of the equation for horizontal shear stress, so that that you can 'feel' the forces and stresses. That equation will need adaptation for the case you have got, and I would suggest you look carefully at the units required for a clue on how to do it.
Question 3 looks ambiguous to me. It probably means a section 2.5 x 0.5 but could also be interpreted as a punching shear problem with an area 4x2x0.5 x 0.5 deep (that is a rectangular blob around the column being forced through the slab ( a bit like when you punch holes in file paper).

thanks for your time and guidance.
