To solve the equation 4x + 6 = -10, first isolate the term with x by subtracting 6 from both sides, resulting in 4x = -16. Next, divide both sides by 4 to find x = -4. The confusion arises from the negative value on the right side, but the steps to isolate x remain consistent regardless of the signs. Understanding the arithmetic operations involved clarifies the solution process. The final answer is x = -4.

I'm not sure how to figure this one out, I'm confused by the -10 part.

Doesn't $4x+6=-10$ imply that $4x=-10-6=-16$ ?

Here is a little puzzle from the book 100 Geometric Games by Pierre Berloquin. The side of a small square is one meter long and the side of a larger square one and a half meters long. One vertex of the large square is at the center of the small square. The side of the large square cuts two sides of the small square into one- third parts and two-thirds parts. What is the area where the squares overlap?
