In summary, male humpback whales change their songs every year as a form of communication for attracting mates, establishing dominance, and potentially for navigation purposes. Researchers track these changes using specialized equipment and observations. The exact reason for this behavior is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a way for the whales to keep their songs unique and adapt to changes in their environment. Not all male humpback whales change their songs every year, and humans can hear their songs but do not fully understand their meanings.

I recently heard on a travel show that the song of male humpback whales changes every year, but that all the whales sing the exact same song every year...

Any ideas on how this occurs?

A gavering of whales to pass on a new song and then go and sing it. That might be try. Or magnetic waves that tell each whale what to do.

Just some ideas.
