Strange question - electronics kits

I am interested in tinkering with electronics and learning how to design / execute projects, and I thought I'd start out with a kit. I was wondering what kits, if any are recommended / of good use, and if you don't use them, where you recommend I find spare electronics parts for my projects? Thanks.
