Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the educational paths for someone interested in predicting the share market and engaging in financial modeling. Participants explore the merits of studying mathematics versus a combination of mathematics and business-related fields, particularly in the context of quantitative finance.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire to work in predicting the share market and asks which educational path would be more beneficial.
  • Another participant strongly advocates for studying mathematics or mathematics/economics, suggesting that a business degree may not be suitable for a career in quantitative finance.
  • A different participant notes that in Australia, the term "business" encompasses various majors, including business law, accountancy, and economics.
  • One participant argues that applied mathematics would theoretically provide better prospects and believes that the skills learned in mathematics can be adapted to the business world.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present differing views on the best educational path, with no consensus reached on whether mathematics alone, a combination of mathematics and economics, or a business-related degree is preferable for a career in quantitative finance.

I wish to work as someone who predicts the share market, financial modelling etc. However what would have a better prospective?

definitely math, or math/economics. Do not do business if you want to go into quantitative finance. Some people even major in physics.

this is australia and we call it business but you can major it a variety of things like business law, accountancy and economics.

I would say applied math would give you a better prospective, at least in theory. I'm sure you'll be able to adapt the math you know to the business world easily enough.
