Time travel and Asimov's Eternals

AI Thread Summary
Asimov's "The End of Eternity" explores the concept of time travel through the actions of the Eternals, who manipulate history to prevent tragic events like wars. This manipulation, however, stifles humanity's creative potential and delays advancements such as interstellar travel. The narrative culminates in an intervention by humans from the far future, aiming to eliminate the Eternals from history. The book is highly recommended for fans of time travel, though it is noted that the plot contains significant twists that alter the future irrevocably by the conclusion.

Time travel and Asimov's "Eternals"

I was reading Asimov's The End of Eternity over the weekend.

The plot: Through time travel, the Eternals have been manipulating history so as to avoid tragic events (wars, etc.) that happened in the pre-manipulation version of history from having happened in the manipulated version. In so doing, they are also destroying humanity's creative potential and delaying the emergence of interstellar travel technology. Humans From The Far Distant Future intervene to remove the Eternals from history.

I thought I'd drop a note and recommend the book to anyone into time travel.

I second that recommendation. That's always been one of my favorite books.

Great should have came with spoiler warnings :/

Don't worry. The future will have been irrevocably changed by time you reach the end of the book.

Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
