AI Thread Summary
A couple on holiday in Spitsbergen faced a dangerous encounter when a 305 kg male polar bear attempted to enter their cabin by pushing through a window. Despite firing several warning shots, the bear remained persistent, leading to the unfortunate decision to shoot it for safety. The incident raises questions about wildlife interactions in the area and the potential for bear meat consumption. The discussion also touches on broader economic themes, including references to a bear market in Europe and the symbolic value of owning bee-hives as a status symbol linked to bear protection.

A couple on a cabin holiday at Spitsbergen was rather rattled when a 305 kg male polar bear sought to join them inside by pushing through the window. They had already sent of several warning shots (that is usually enough to make a bear understand he isn't welcome), but this particular bear was persistent. Unfortunately, they had to shoot him. :frown:

What's next? Do people over there eat bear meat?

I read in wall street journal that Europe is having a strong bear market.

Actually, in our current natural household economy, owning bee-hives has become the mark of nobility, because they can then pay their bear guards.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
