VECSEL laser tuning (question kindly reply)

In summary, VECSEL laser tuning involves using a gain element and semiconductor external cavity to adjust the wavelength of the laser by changing temperature, current, or angle. This allows for a wide range of wavelengths to be achieved, from near-infrared to ultraviolet. However, there are limitations such as design and material constraints, as well as potential stability and reliability issues. VECSEL laser tuning can achieve precise wavelength control with a resolution of a few nanometers, making it useful in various scientific and industrial applications such as spectroscopy, microscopy, and optical communications.

Tunable wavelength operation will prove important for many VECSEL applications.
The target here will be to extend the relative wavelength tuning ranges from the
currently demonstrated 3–8%, 33nm tuning near 972nm , 80nm tuning near
1980nm, and 156nmtuning near 2000nm, to the 10–15% level

In this paragraph i want to know whta is mean by 33nm tuning near 972nm

I think it is the deviation from the "tuned" wavelength.

1. How does VECSEL laser tuning work?

The VECSEL (Vertical-External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) is a tunable laser that uses a gain element and a semiconductor external cavity to achieve wavelength tunability. By varying the temperature, current, or angle of the cavity, the laser can be tuned to emit different wavelengths of light.

2. What is the range of wavelengths that can be achieved with VECSEL laser tuning?

VECSEL lasers can achieve a wide range of wavelengths, typically from the near-infrared to the ultraviolet spectrum. The exact range depends on the specific design and materials used in the laser.

3. Are there any limitations to VECSEL laser tuning?

VECSEL laser tuning is limited by the gain element and external cavity design, as well as the available materials. Additionally, the tuning range may be limited by the stability and reliability of the laser.

4. How precise is VECSEL laser tuning?

VECSEL laser tuning can achieve very precise wavelength control, typically with a tuning resolution of a few nanometers. This level of precision is important for many scientific and industrial applications.

5. What are the main applications of VECSEL laser tuning?

VECSEL lasers are used in a variety of applications, including spectroscopy, microscopy, laser printing, optical communications, and more. The ability to tune the laser to different wavelengths makes it versatile and useful in many fields of research and technology.
