AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the ethics of requesting something and then not using it. Some participants argue that asking for items only to leave them unused can deprive those who genuinely need them, regardless of whether the requester pays for them. The conversation touches on motivations for such requests, suggesting that some may ask to have items as a form of insurance or to prevent others from accessing them. The dialogue reflects a mix of opinions, with some viewing the act as beggary while others see it as a reasonable precaution. Overall, the debate highlights the complexities of need versus desire in the context of resource allocation.

Is it bad to ask for some thing then not use it when you have it ?

Physics news on Phys.org
no way that's how you get lots of free stuff

It is bad because you are preventing the others who actually need it even if you buy it with your own money.

Well if some one, or even a group of people asks a favour, and the favour is
granted but not used.

Why should you ask for something when you're not going to use it?

We seek insurance. We hope in most cases we don't have to use it.

We seek (some of us) guns for protection. I'd prefer NOT to shoot an intruder in my home.

The list goes on...

Perhaps because your ulterior motive is to prevent its current owner from using it.
