SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the decision between pursuing Mechatronics Engineering versus Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Participants emphasize the interdisciplinary advantages of Mechatronics but caution against specializing too early. It is suggested that a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree may provide a broader foundation, allowing for a smoother transition to Mechatronics in graduate studies. The consensus leans towards the benefits of a Mechanical Engineering background for long-term career flexibility.

Hi,

I'm applying to Waterloo's Engineering program right now, but am torn between mechatronics engineering and mechanical engineering (with a possible mechatronics option in 3rd/4th years).

I recognize the importance of the interdisciplinary nature of mechatronics to the industry, but I have some concerns.

Is it true that choosing a specialized field such as mechatronics for undergrad is a bad idea?
Is it better to study mechanical for undergrad and then go to grad school for mechatronics?

Help is appreciated
Thanks
