I love this sad song a lot.

(rough translation I copied and fixed)
Maybe there’s someone in this world,
Who I can deeply be in love with
Why would I be so serious about your uncertain love
Passion and love, sleeplessly
How do I know that falling for you is like self-burning
Still I want to get close to you
Maybe infatuation can be exchanged for your deep love
I am hopeless and now I only hope god will feel sorry for me
As our desire is about to end, you don’t ask for it again
Don’t know what to cherish this moment, you ignore my sufferings of your uncertain love
It's only because you get used to my tears
I’m not a surprise to you anymore, you don't have a feel for me anymore
How can this be like a sour conversation in a movie?
You would love me forever, you once said so but now act as if nothing had happened
My love's gone forever.
I was in love and am feeling this pain for the rest of my life, with tearful eyes and a broken heart

The Lyrics:

"Bittersweet Symphony"- The Verve

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
You're a slave to money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah,

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Well I never pray
But tonight I'm on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airways are clean and there's nobody singing to me now

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
I can't change
I can't change

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
Try to find some money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the things meet yeah

You know I can change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

I can't change my mold
no, no, no, no, no,
I can't change
Can't change my body,
no, no, no

I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
Been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Have you ever been down?
Have you've ever been down?

Bernie Taupin explains why we need sad songs:

Guess there are times when we all need to share a little pain
And ironing out the rough spots
Is the hardest part when memories remain
And it's times like these when we all need to hear the radio
`Cause from the lips of some old singer
We can share the troubles we already know

Turn them on, turn them on
Turn on those sad songs
When all hope is gone
Why don't you tune in and turn them on

They reach into your room
Just feel their gentle touch
When all hope is gone
Sad songs say so much

If someone else is suffering enough to write it down
When every single word makes sense
Then it's easier to have those songs around
The kick inside is in the line that finally gets to you
and it feels so good to hurt so bad
And suffer just enough to sing the blues

Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say
Sad songs, they say so much

One or two tear jerkers for me in the previously listed songs

specially Don McLean - Vincent and Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody

some others not mentioned, but in my collection and never fail to bring tears to the eyes ( yeah, I'm a big softie at heart )---

Pink Floyd -- Marooned ( Instrumental)

Interestingly a lot of Pink Floyd gives me sad/welling up emotional thoughts. Not so much because of
the song lyrics but more so when I think back to less stressful times in the 1970's when life was much
simpler compared to my life today. Fleetwood Mac do that too to some extent. Both those bands were
high on my favourite list a way back then.

Elton John -- Funeral for a Friend

Simon and Garfunkel -- Sound of Silence and Bridge over Troubled WatersDave

Not a "song" in the usual sense because there are no vocals, but I wouldn't mind having Sibelius's Swan of Tuonela played at my funeral:

For a lost love, I like Forever free from W.A.S.P.:

I ride all alone and can't see
The road to nowhere anymore
And shadows whispers are calling me
To forbidden forests by the shore
And there she fell deep in the night
One breath away from Heaven's light
And she said- don't cry for me, I'm leaving you

The wind cries her name in the breeze
But I can't hold her anymore
Some fallen angel had come to me
And fell too heavy on my soul
And stole from me the love that I have
Lords of time say never die
And said- don't cry for me, cause I'll be

Riding the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free
I'll ride the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free
Forever free

Forever in my hearts a fire, a fire burning
I wake up nights and hear her crying, crying my name

Riding the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free
I ride the wind forever free
High in the wind forever free
Forever free

A classic from French Canadian music is La complainte du phoque en Alaska by Beau Dommage. It's the story of a guy losing his girlfriend but from the point of view of a seal in Alaska! Very poetic lyrics:

The complaint from the seal in Alaska

Believe it or not
In Alaska
There is a seal that gets bored as hell
His girlfriend is gone to make a living
In a circus in the States

The seal is all alone
He looks at the sun
Who goes down gently on the glacier
He think of the States, crying in a low voice
That's how it goes when your girlfriend dropped you

It is not worth it
To leave those you love
To spin balls on your nose
It makes kids laugh
It never lasts long
It makes nobody laugh
When the children are grown up

When the seal is bored,
He looks at his fur shining
Like the streets of New York after the rain
He dreams of Chicago, of Marilyn Monroe
He wants to see her girlfriend make a show ...

It's nothing but a story
I cannot make believe
But sometimes I feel like
That it's me sitting on the ice, with both hands in the face
My love is gone and I miss her

It is not worth it
To leave those you love
To spin balls on your nose
It makes kids laugh
It never lasts long
It makes nobody laugh
When the children are grown up

The most twisted sad song I know is You're all I need by Mötley Crüe:

The blade of my knife
Faced away from your heart
Those last few nights
It turned and sliced you apart
This love that I tell
Now feels lonely as hell
From this padded prison cell

So many times I said
You'd only be mine
I gave my blood and my tears
And loved you cyanide
When you took my lips
I took your breath
Sometimes love's better off dead

You're all I need, make you only mine
I loved you so I set you free
I had to take your life
You're all I need, you're all I need
And I loved you so, but you didn't love me
Laid out cold
Now we're both alone
But killing you helped me keep you home
I guess it was bad
Cause love can be sad
But we finally made the news

Tied up smiling
I thought you were happy
Never opened your eyes
I thought you were napping
I got so much to learn
About love in this world
But we finally made the news

You're all I need, make you only mine
I loved you so, so I put you to sleep.

Depicting the horror of war is One by Metallica:

I can’t remember anything
Can’t tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel the scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I’m waking up, I cannot see
That there’s not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me

Back in the womb it’s much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can’t look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I’ll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me

Now the world is gone, I’m just one
Oh God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, help me

Darkness
Imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine
Has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

Anthem to the Estranged by Metal Church is the story of a man losing everything and becoming homeless:

Starved for destination, a beggar man by trade
A desperate man needs more than someone else to blame
Friendless he appears, he hides behind his tears
For things he's lost, or things he'll never have at all

The forgotten man wanders misplaced in the world
Obscurity is all the eye can see, and I recall

All alone again

As we pass on by and continue with our day
Can we appraise the quality of life some other way?

All alone again

When you take a longer look at someone on the run
You may see reflections of yourself becoming one
Take an extra moment when you find yourself at peace
To think about your values and your own affluency

Everything you've worked for and everything you've done
May be thrown by the wayside, and you're not the only one
Everything around you may seen worn and overused
But imagine yourself removed from all that you're used to

All alone again

Once an influential man, once was in his prime
He spends his days repeating lines like "can you spare a dime?"
Shunned by those loved you and by those who were your friends
Can you adjust to a different life of living on the edge?

The destitute find meaning in a different way of life
The doorways that they dwell in are shelter in the night
No shining crystal possessions set out for his display
His purpose is to find the food to get him throught the day

All alone again

Roaming aimless through the streets of supply and demand
Once a gypsy disconnected, no more, no future plans
Self discarded king of ruin, worthless to the world
Fight to keep his sanity, his voice is never heard

You may think it thoughtless and his mind gone astray
He always seems to find a reason to get him through the day

All alone again

He staggers down the alley to drink his spirits by himself
As he prays to God that he wakes up somewhere else

Still by Metal Church, Rest in Pieces (April 15, 1912) tells the story of the Titanic:

Integrity of construction
The best money can buy
Her size is greater than any
A Belfast shipyard's pride
Signal flags spelled out the word "Success"
On her maneuvering trials

Preservers and lifeboats were not in excess
Unsinkable, no plans to save lives
Athinai reports icebergs and field ice
At seven bells ahead just five miles
A black hulk against the night's darkness
Disaster along starboard side

Full speed astern were the orders
It would do them no good
No apparent collision
A rip deep below the waterline

"Come at once, we have struck a berg"
Interference in transmission
The newest, largest ship afloat
Had two hours to live
Lower all lifeboats, we have too few!
Women and children first!
Distress rockets fill the air
"Abandon Ship!"

Sinking faster, every light ablaze
Machinery, engines, crashing to the bow
Arching vertical, stern points to the sky
The great ship fractured
Everyone must die

Watching their families make it to safety
Fifteen hundred went down
The orchestra played to the last moment
An eerie almost unreal sound
The calm and icy North Atlantic
Titanic's burial ground

In my darkest hour by Megadeth is probably a good representation of depression:

In my hour of need, ha!
No, you're not there
And though I reached out for you
Wouldn't lend a hand

Through the darkest hour
Grace did not shine on me
Feels so cold
Very cold
No one cares for me

Did you ever think I'd get lonely?
Did you ever think that I needed love?
Did you ever think?
Stop thinking
You're the only one
That I'm thinking of

You'll never know
How hard I tried
To find my space
And satisfy you too

Things will be better
When I'm dead and gone
Don't try to understand
Knowing you I'm probably wrong

But oh how I lived my life for you
Still you'd turn away
Now as I die for you
My flesh still crawls as I breathe your name

All these years
I thought I was wrong
Now I know it was you

Raise your head
Raise your face
Your eyes
Tell me
Who do you think you are?

I walk
I walk alone
To the promised land
There's a better place for me
But it's far, far away

Everlasting life for me
In a perfect world
But I got to die first
Please god send me on my way

Time has a way of taking time
Loneliness is not only felt by fools
Alone I call to ease the pain
Yearning to be held by you
Alone so alone, I'm lost
Consumed by the pain
The pain, the pain, the pain
Won't you hold me again
You just laughed, ha ha
jerk!

My whole life's work
Built on the past
Time has come when all things shall pass
This good thing passed away...

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Yes. The song grants the sense that one can reach out an touch pre civil war America, brings it alive one last time before it all slips away.
