What are the implications of neutrino mass on the universe?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around concerns regarding neutrino masses, particularly referencing a paper titled "Neutrino mass and mixing implied by underground deficit of low energy muon-neutrino events." Key points from the paper suggest that the mass values of neutrinos could have significant implications, including the claim that relic tau neutrinos possess enough energy density to potentially close the universe. This statement sparked a light-hearted exchange about the implications of such a scenario, with a humorous remark about the impact on students and bars, indicating a blend of serious scientific inquiry and casual banter among participants.

Hi everyone,

I have always been very worried about the possible consequences of neutrino masses. I just came accros a paper which I thought I would share with you.

First, the reference :
Neutrino mass and mixing implied by underground deficit of low energy muon-neutrino events
John G. LEARNED, Sandip PAKVASA, and Thomas J. WEILER
Volume 207, number l, PHYSICS LETTERS B, 9 June 1988

You might not have access to this paper, so I will copy/past below the most interesting claim published in this respectable journal
(below page 3, from bottom of left column).
These mass values imply several interesting results :
(a) [...]
(b) [...]
(c) [...]
(d) Relic tau neutrinos have sufficient energy density to close the university
I hope you will still be able to sleep tonight.

The time to start worrying is when it closes the bars. Then where would the students go?

If that isn't a typo meaning universe for university, I think I'll sleep all right.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
