AI Thread Summary
Biomedical informatics is an interdisciplinary field that combines knowledge from medicine, biology, and computer science to enhance healthcare delivery and research. Key activities in this area include the development of electronic health records, telemedicine services, and real-time data sharing among healthcare professionals. Practical applications involve using databases for monitoring patient health and employing computational methods to analyze biological data. Educational opportunities, such as those offered at the University of Genoa in Italy, focus on areas like bioinformatics, which integrates diverse datasets, and computational biology, which utilizes mathematical modeling to study complex biological systems. This field is essential for advancing both medical and biological research through innovative technology and data analysis.

Hey, all:

I'm interested in possibly branching into this field. What is it like? I know there is an overlap with bioinformatics and computer some computer science.

Anyone has any hands-on experience that they can share?

Biomedical informatics

These are possible examples from very simple activities that i do as technician or patient:

I've just made an electronic health record with Access database which is applied on monitoring of workers in my hospital - I'm going to take a course of distance learning to acquire continuing medical education credits for my carrere.

My pharmacy has just started a service of telemedicine, a remote control of ecg by a specialist that writes a diagnosis on line - Few days ago i went to emergency room where in real time physicians got my parameters from medical imaging and blood tests.

What I wrote is referred to medical informatics actually. As you know biomedical informatics gives knowledge and computational methods for problem solving not only in medical but also in biological field.

In Italy at the University of Genoa, you can study it, in particular:

- bioinformatics integrative, an envelope of an unified access to datasets, for example genomics and proteomics, via semantic web, metadata and ontology, or datawarehouse, to extract and integrate in a database;

- computational biology /system biology, an application of data-analytical and theoretical methods, mathematical modeling and computational simulation techniques to the study the evolution of complex biological systems.

I don't know if anyone on here works for any of the well known defense companies of your country, whichever country you are from?? Also, if you choose to work in one, do you think the engineering education provide from your school would adequately prepare you for the job. What do I mean by that? Well if you work at say Lockheed Martin and you work in the latest iteration of a missile or if you work at Pratt & Whitney, they assign you to work in the team helping out with building the jet...
Hello, I graduated from undergrad a few years ago with a Major in Physics and minor in Electrical Engineering. I tried to get experience working on and testing circuits through my professor who studied Neutrinos, however covid caused the opportunity to go away and I graduated with no experience or internships. I have attempted to break into the engineering industry with no success. Right now I am considering going for a Masters in Electrical Engineering and I need advice on if this would be...
So lately, my interest in the realm of optics/optoelectronics/photonics engineering has grown and I have started to seriously consider pursuing a career in the field. I have done a bit of career research and also have done some learning on the side to gather more knowledge on these topics. However, I have some questions on what a career in these fields would look like, and I wanted to find out more about this area to know what I would be getting myself into if I did make the choice to pursue...
